The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently announced that Chartered Accountancy (CA) qualification will now be treated as equivalent to postgraduate degree. The decision has been made at the request of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) to help CAs pursue higher studies and improve their mobility.
The Institute has sought the status of a post-graduation degree for candidates who have qualified in chartered accountancy (CA). The institute claimed that the CA Intermediate programme should also be allowed the status of a graduate degree.
The institute said in the statement, “This will not only help Chartered Accountants for pursuing higher studies but will also facilitate the mobility of Indian CAs globally”.
The UGC announced that students who qualify for the Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), or Cost and Works Accountant (ICWA) exams will be considered equivalent to postgraduate degree holders.
ICAI CCM Dhiraj Khandelwal tweeted, “Based on the representation made by ICAI, UGC approved CA/CS/ ICWA qualification equivalent to postgraduation degree (PDG)..Wow…it’s a great recognition to our profession”.
The Chartered Accountancy (CA) course is run by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the Company Secretaryship (CS) course is offered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), and the Cost and Work Accountancy (ICWA) one by the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI).
After this announcement, CA, CS or ICWA qualified persons can also apply for UGC-NET as their degrees will be considered as a Master’s degree.
A student after appearing in the Class 12 examination held by a recognized education board in India who wants to the profession of Chartered Accountancy has to enroll for Foundation Course offered by the Institute. Meanwhile, ICAI released the schedule of the CA foundation exam to be conducted this year. The foundation exam will be held on June 24, 26, 28, and 30.
