The Central Government will provide INR 70,000 as a monthly fellowship to those researchers doing their PhDs in IITs or Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, Union higher education secretary Kewal Kumar Sharma said recently at the 67th Foundation Day of IIT Kharagpur. As part of the research fellowship scheme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Students are given adequate financial support and facilities to do research here in India.
Presently Students admitted to the PhD programme (regular) at IITs are eligible for a monthly scholarship of INR 25,000 from MHRD for the first two years and a monthly stipend of INR 28,000 for the next three years; after five years, they are eligible for a monthly financial assistance of INR 12,000 for one year. PhD candidates who do not avail hostel accommodation are also eligible for a house rent allowance (HRA) as per norms.
