Mechanical Engineering is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production and operation of machinery. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2019 Exam will be held online on February 2, 3, 9 and 10, 2019 for 24 papers by IIT Madras. Candidates appearing for GATE 2019 Mechanical Engineering (ME) must know proper syllabus, exam pattern and cut off of the subject for better GATE Score.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines and one of the topmost coveted subjects that engineering aspirants want to pursue. Mechanical Engineering, is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems.
The GATE 2019 exam will be held on February 2-3 and February 9-10, 2019. It is time for the GATE 2019 Mechanical Engineering Exam aspirants, to start their preparation in a serious and intense manner. Aspirants who wish to apply for the GATE 2018 examination will have to register themselves by filling the application form, which will be available from September 1 to September 21, 2018.
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering), a national level examination, is a qualifying exam for admissions to post-graduate programs like M. Tech/M.S/Direct PhD in IISc / IITs / NITs. GATE scores may also be used by several public sector undertakings recruitment (i.e. like BSNL, BHEL, GAIL, Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum etc.), not only admissions but GATE will give you scholarships during ME/M.Tech programmes.
On this page, candidates will be able to check the GATE 2019 Mechanical Engineering Syllabus, GATE Exam pattern, Cutoffs and other details. so that you can have all the required information in one place and simply focus on preparation. In order to study and have proper practice, it is important to use the most recommended GATE 2019 Books for Mechanical Engineering (ME), which will be prescribed in the next article.
Best of luck for the Exam!
GATE 2019 Mechanical Engineering Syllabus
The first step the students need to take is to collect the correct GATE 2019 Mechanical syllabus. This step will ensure to prepare only those subjects from which the questions would be asked in the GATE exam. The same will prevent unnecessary time wastage by studying non-important topics.
Mark the Subjects and topic according to weightage and prepare with more weightage subjects or something that interest you. This requires a good checking of the GATE 2019 Syllabus for Mechanical Engineering to know in detail the topics that need to be covered. You can plan your preparation after segregation of the topics into difficult, easy and to be learnt. The topics you are strong in need to be revised while the others require a good effort. It is an important exercise to be clear in your Gate 2019 preparation.
Concentrate more on general aptitude; this will be quite easy to score more. Don’t stick with the unknown questions and concepts, have a look at almost all categories of question paper and choose the section that you will excel. Have the major topic covered in GATE 2019 Mechanical Engineering –
- Complex Variables
- Differential Equations
- Linear Algebra
- Numerical Methods
- Probability and Statistics
Applied Mechanics and Design
- Engineering Mechanics
- Machine Design
- Mechanics of Materials
- Theory of Machines
Fluid Mechanics & Thermal Sciences
- Fluid Mechanics
- Heat Transfer
Materials, Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering
- Casting, Forming and Joining Process
- Computer Integrated Manufacturing
- Engineering Materials
- Inventory Control
- Metrology and Inspection
- Machining and Machine Tool Operations
- Operations Research
- Production Planning and Control
Plan a schedule to read these each concept and practice at least 10-20 questions daily from each concept. It is important to do this exercise to be clear in your GATE preparation.
GATE 2019 Mechanical Engineering Exam Pattern
First of all, make a clear understanding of the GATE exam pattern. GATE exam is online and the questions asked are objective type. A candidate can appear in only one out of 24 papers. Each paper consists of 100 marks with a total 65 total number of questions. Candidates will have a time duration of 3 hours.
The paper has 2 type of questions namely, MCQs (multiple choice questions) and numeric types questions which are to be answered on virtual keyboard via mouse. The marks awarded for both typed question can be 1 or 2 depending upon the score a question carries. For negative marking, it is 1/3 for 1 marker and 2/3 for 2 marker multiple choice questions. No negative marking is there for numeric type questions. There are 3 sections.
1) Mechanical Engineering (70%)
2) Aptitude (15%)
3) Engineering Mathematics (15%)
The aptitude problems are based on basic math and English skills and are very easy. They do not require much preparation. The course for the Mathematics portion is vast but the questions asked are relatively easy. It would be better to cover all the topics as it is a high scoring portion. Most questions are short and based on direct application of formulae. The most important part is Mechanical Engineering. This section is comparatively difficult and requires sincere effort.
GATE Qualifying Cutoff for Mechanical Engineering
The cutoff trends to qualify the mechanical engineering examination of GATE is provided below for reference. To qualify the examination, the candidates will have to meet the GATE cutoff marks which is different as per the category.
After completing B.Tech or B.E, most of the students who want to make their career in research and development, they look forward for Masters and PhD degree. Getting a Master’s degree from reputed universities like IIT, IISC etc. increases the importance and knowledge of his field. When anyone qualifies GATE, means he/she has good engineering knowledge. That’s why R&D companies and organizations demand for GATE qualified score during their recruitment process also.
