GATE 2019 PI Engineering Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Reference Books And Preparation Tips

Production and Industrial (PI) Engineering is an interdisciplinary engineering discipline that includes manufacturing technology, engineering sciences, management and optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2019 exam will be held on February 2-3 and February 9-10, 2019. It is time for the GATE 2019 PI Engineering aspirants to start their preparation in a serious and intense manner, but before that, it requires proper planning, a roadmap to reach the aim of GATE 2019 better Score.

GATE,i.e, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an entrance examination for students who are interested in the admission for Master’s programs, direct Doctoral programs in with MHRD scholarship and also some other colleges without MHRD scholarship. The score obtained is also used by many Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) as recruitment parameter such as NTPC, ONGC, Airport Authority of India etc. This year the examination is conducted by IIT Madras.

The registration process for the examination has started and the last date to submit the application is on September 21, 2018. The examination dates for GATE 2019 are  2^nd , 3^rd , 9^th  and 10^th  of February 2019. There are 24 subjects/ disciplines for which the GATE 2019 examination will be conducted. Some of them are Agricultural Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, Production and Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering etc.

Every year several students appear in GATE to appear for the paper of Production and Industrial Engineering. With just 5 months approximately left, a calculative methodology must be adopted by aspirants for a better preparation.

Know about the latest pattern:

Before the preparation of any entrance examination,it is important to know the pattern of the examination.This idea implies to GATE as well. The types questions asked are Multiple Choice Questions(MCQ) and Numerical Answer Type questins(NAT).In MCQ,one option is to be selected as the right answer among other options whereas,in NAT questions,the answer is to be done in the form of some integer value.The paper in total is of 100 marks and the number of questions are 68.The whole paper is divided into three sections :

• General Aptitude : This section comprises 15% of the paper.
• Engineering Mathematics: This section also comprises of 15% of the paper.
• Subject wise section: This makes upto 70% of the whole paper.

NOTE:

The questions are both of 1 mark and 2 marks. For 1 mark MCQs, 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer whereas for 2 mark MCQs ,2/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong response.Also,no marks will be awarded for questions which are not unattempted.No negative marking will be done for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions

Be thorough with the syllabus :

Having a brief knowledge of syllabus is important since it narrow downs the preparation process.This will help in a precise yet efficient preparation and will also help you to sketch down a rough study plan. Keep updated yourself with the latest syllabus of the current year since GATE alters the syllabus many a time.Search for the topics which carry more importance than others.

Engineering Materials,Applied Mechanics,Theory of Machines and Design,Thermal Engineering

• PRODUCTION ENGINEERING

Metal Casting,Metal Forming,Metal Joining Processes,Machining and Machine Tool Operations,Tool Engineering,Metrology and Inspection,Powder Metallurgy,Polymers and Composites,Manufacturing Analysis,Computer Integrated Manufacturing

• INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING:

Product Design and Development,Engineering Economy and Costing,Work System Design,.Facility Design,Production Planning and Inventory Control,Operation Research,Quality Management ,Reliability and Maintenance,Management Information System,Intellectual Property System.

Books and other study materials:

Books do play a very important role in any preparation.After all,they the source of knowledge.Choose books according to your topics. Stick to the standard reference books since they cover majority of the topics in easy language.Some of the books referred to aspirants of Production and Industrial Engineering for GATE 2019 preparation are

Other than books,there are some paid-unpaid online GATE tutorials for every subject to clear up the doubts. One can get enrolled in such courses too .They also tell about various tricks and tips for various type of questions..Similarly,along with self study,coaching classes can also be joined which provide several studying materials for the preparation.

Make a Study Plan:

A study plan must be made and strictly followed by every student to utilize the time in an efficient way.Alloting time to different sections and subjects will keep in check that all the topics are covered without being missed out.Time can be allotted in the following way:

• 1 month for General Aptitude
• 3 months for topics of the subject
• 1 month for revision and mock tests.

There are possible chances to get deviated slightly from the study plan but try not to!Also, allot the time of 3 months for various subjects of Production and Industrial Technology according to your strength and weakness in that particular subject

Prepare the Revision material:

Revision material are the notes and the important parts highlighted during the time of studies.It can be some formulae, concepts,or anything. Make sure to make a tidy and systematic notes since these are going to be very important during the time of revision.Try not mixing up the notes of different subjects to avoid chaos.

Take mock tests:

Mock tests are very important to evaluate the level of preparation.Take mock tests after completing any major topic.This will help you to identify the weak areas/topics.These are the topics which need more time to be put for preparation.Mark those topics and strengthen by giving more time on its preparation and by solving various questions on those particular topics.Problem solving helps a lot to understand and apply the concepts.also,do not forget to take several mock tests at the last month as well.This will help you to boost up the confidence and will also help in managing the time in problem solving.Several of the mock tests are available online as well.

Do the proper revision:

Revision is really crucial so as to brush up and go through all the important concepts.The notes those were made during the time of preparation are very handy for revision.Revise all the important topics, especially the weaker ones.Along with the mock tests,dedicate the last month to the revision as well.By doing so,all the important topics wil not be forgotten at the peek time.

A healthy mind resides in a healthy body.All the strategies will go to vain if you stay unfit.Have a healthy balanced diet.Take adequate amount of rest and sleep.Also,do not forget to take small breaks during preparation to overcome monotony
