CAT 2019 Percentile Score Calculation: CAT (Common Admission Test) is one of the most popular exams for the candidates who are interested in pursuing MBA/PGDM program. The score obtained in the CAT Exam is used by IIMs and many other B-Schools to get admission for Management programmes. The CAT score is different from the final CAT percentile score.
The CAT percentile Score tells you that what per cent of the students has scored less than you in the examination. The percentile score of CAT only indicates the position of the student in the merit list and does not tell the exact score obtained by the student. The CAT 2019 percentile score is calculated in a different way.
CAT 2019 will be held on November 24, 2019, and the result is expected to be announced in 1st week of January 2020. It is important that students understand how their CAT percentile will be calculated and ranks allotted to them. Read the complete article to know more about CAT 2019 Percentile Score, how it is calculated, what its mean, the overall calculation of the CAT score.
CAT Marking Scheme
Common Admission Test to be conducted in 2 sessions will have 100 questions for 3 marks each to be answered in three hours. In CAT examination, for every correct answer, a total of 3 marks is allotted. For every wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted. No mark is deducted or given for the questions which are not attempted.
A stepwise calculation for CAT 2019 score is released by IIM Kozhikode, the managing Institute for CAT 2019. The process through which the CAT score is calculated is known as the normalization process.
What is Normalization of CAT Score?
The first step after the exam is to ensure the equalisation of the difficulty levels of the two sessions. As the test held in two different sessions, so different sets of paper are issued in different sessions. So how to ensure there is no disparity? Here is where the CAT normalization process comes to the fore. These parameters (location, session, the difficulty of the different paper sets) are adjusted and equalized while scaling the raw score obtained by the student such that there is no disparity on account of these factors. This normalized score is used for calculation of the CAT percentile.
Calculation of CAT 2019 Percentile Score
Since the CAT exam held in two sessions, the normalised score obtained by students will be converted into percentile score to arrive at the rank obtained in the exam. This article simplifies and details the process used in CAT percentile calculation for the ease of the students attempting the exam.
The stepwise procedure to calculate the marks in any section, be it Quantitative Aptitude (QA) is given below :
1- Variable N is taken. N is basically the total number of aspirants that appear in the CAT examination in both the morning and afternoon sessions.
2- Now a variable r is assigned. Here r means the rank on the basis of the score obtained in that section. If any number of the candidates obtain an equal score, the same r is assigned to them. The person who gets the highest mark in the section is assigned rank 1.
3- Now, with the help of the formula (N-r/N) * 100, percentile in that section is calculated.
4- In this step, the rounding off for the score is done up to the two places of decimal. For example, if a candidate scores 97.985 his score would be rounded to 97.99 for that section.
Note: the similar process is repeated to get the percentile scores of DILR and VARC section. Once the overall percentile for the CAT score in all the section is found out, the scores are added together. The similar methodology is applied to obtain the final CAT percentile score.
