What is TDS or Tax Deducted at Source?
Tax Deducted at Source or TDS as the very name implies, is a type of indirect tax with the aim to collect taxes at the very source of income. This indirect method of tax combines the concepts of “pay as you earn” and “collect as it is being earned.”
As per this concept, a person (deductor) who is liable to make payment of specified nature to any other person (deductee) shall deduct tax at source and remit the same into the account of the Central Government. The deductee from whose income tax has been deducted at source would be entitled to get a credit of the amount so deducted on the basis of Form 26AS or TDS certificate issued by the deductor.
As TDS is cut at the source of income, it helps check tax evasion and also relieves the taxpayer from the burden of paying huge taxes all at once at the end of the financial year.
