Industrial Training Institutes: Know About ITI Courses, Fees, Eligibility, Admission and Assessment

Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) are the skill developing post secondary institutes established by Directorate General of Training (DGT) which come under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. These institutes are established to provide practical training to students who have done their primary education i.e passed 8th/10th/12th class depending on the course requirement.

In these ITIs, training for the students can be of a minimum of six months to a maximum of two years. These training institutes have been established in almost every district of our country. These institutes work with the aim to provide technical manpower to the fast emerging industrial sector of our developing economy.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

A candidate has minimum 8th /10th class or 12th class passed. Depends upon the type of course opted by the candidate.

Duration of Courses

It varies from 6 months to 2 years

Fee for Courses

The fee for courses ranges from Rs.1,600 to Rs. 71,000. It depends on the selection of course.

Type of Courses

Certificate courses are mainly offered in ITIs. After completion of the course, a certificate is provided from ITIs.

Industrial Training institutes provide both technical as well as non-technical training to candidates in different trades. A candidate who has at least passed the minimum class can join a specialized course in the ITI instead of going for higher studies. They can apply for the course according to their interest and requirement.

Admission in ITIs

Admission in ITIs is purely done on the merit basis. Marks obtained by a student in the last examination are taken into consideration for the  admission process.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission in ITI

Candidates who have cleared their 8th class examination are eligible for admission in ITIs. However, eligibility criteria depend upon the selection of course by the candidate. Maximum qualification required for admission is 12th class pass and candidate age should be in the range of 14 to 40 during admission.

ITI Training Courses

Industrial training institutes offer a wide range of vocational training courses to meet the needs of the different public as well as private market sectors. Theses vocational programmes are provided to candidates under the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT). Two vocational programs are provided to candidates under NCVT council, the Craftsman Training Scheme (CTS) and the Apprenticeship Scheme (ATS) respectively. Candidates require the following tasks to clear any ITI course:

  1. Candidates should be able to read and demonstrate technical parameters of ITI courses. They must be able to organise, plan and execute the process of their course.
  2. They must be able to perform the tasks concerning safety rules, accidental preventive regulations and environmental protection in consideration during their training course.
  3. In order to complete their tasks, they must be able to apply their professional skills and employability in due course of time.

 ITI Certification and Assessment

The candidate performance is evaluated on the basis of their skill, knowledge and attitude during the period of the course and accordingly by the Government of India during their course from time to time. Formative method of testing is used to get the learning outcome of the trainee.

A portfolio of each candidate is maintained by ITI during the examination process. In order, to clear the course a candidate has to obtain 60 per cent marks in practicals and 40 per cent in theory.
