Engineering has become the de-facto graduate degree for a large number of students these days. Around 7 lakh 50 thousand engineers per year from almost 3393 engineering colleges are graduating in a different domain of the Engineering. Earlier students are willing to do their Engineering from the core subjects only, but now Scope of Engineering is changing and many career opportunities are waiting with new technologies and streams.
Earlier, most of the students used to opt Engineering in the core fields as they don’t know much about the updates in this field and Scope of Engineering in new streams. Most of these choices are the core engineering fields, even if you google for the most popular engineering streams in India, you will know there are just four of them ruling namely, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, and Computer Science. Students without looking for their interests, just follow the trends and go for the core branches blindly without getting to know their actual interest.
But time is changing because of a large number of core branch engineers already existing in the market and it’s becoming really difficult for newbies to get jobs. According to surveys, most of the engineers are unemployed say According to Aspiring Minds National Employability Report, which is based on a study of more than 1,50,000 engineering students who graduated in 2015 from over 650 colleges, 80% of Engineers are unemployable, and with increase in no. of engineers, unemployment has also increased in last few years.
The major reason behind this is the lack of knowledge and good counselling of students, there are several fields which are new in existance and their demand is also increasing. In this article, we would highlight some really good options of engineering branches so that students who are aiming for Engineering as their career might be familiar with their zone of interests.

Robotic Engineering
As the era of automation is coming, people are keenly interested in new robots and so is market, and as seen from previous records, the job growth is seen. Robotics is actually not only about robots but also includes Mechanical Engineering, Computer Programming, and Electrical Engineering, so the students who are interested in such areas must look their chance in robotics.”The robotic engineer job market will grow between now and 2024.” mentioned in BLS report. Students interested in computing, programming, design, and extracurricular engineering electives like machine shop and manufacturing classes are meant for this field.
Job potential – In 2017, global industrial robot sales are estimated to increase by 18% to about 346,800 units. From 2018 to 2020, global industrial robot sales are estimated to increase by at least 15% on average per year. Between 2017 and 2020 it is estimated that more than 1.7 million new industrial robots will be installed in factories around the world.
Petroleum Engineering
“Petroleum engineering: is the branch of engineering courses that deals with the study of production of hydrocarbons such as crude oil or natural gas”.Petroleum engineers includes Reservoir, drilling and production engineers. It involves jobs likes Drilling Engineer,Production Engineer,Chief Petroleum Engineer,Offshore Drilling Engineer,Reservoir Engineers .
Job potential-Petroleum engineers will get the attractive pay. In India, an average salary of a petroleum engineer is Rs 6,99,027 per year. And In the US, the average salary of a petroleum engineer is $104000 annually.
Aeronautical Engineering
Astronautical Engineering refers to the study of being in outer space.Aeronautical Engineering is the subject dealing with aerial machines and their complete functioning in various domains such as structures, aerodynamics, propulsion, and avionics.Since ,this branch is new to the developing country like India ,colleges are gradually adopting this field in their curriculum.Currently this field is withholding lesser opportunities but after few years this field might be in demand
Job Potential –The salary to these engineers are offered based on their experience, skills, city of employment and type of employer.Government/Public sectors (approximately) – 8,000 to Rs.10,000 (excluding other allowances).Private Sector – 8,000 to Rs.15,000 per month (approximately) plus perks.Engineering graduates with management degrees –10,000 to Rs.40,000 p.m. (starting approximately) plus perks
Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineering is about the study that deals with the engineering of chemicals to identify and solve technical faults.Chemical engineers processes the raw material into the useful and tge required one.Chemical engineering also work with fields such as nanotechnology, and bio-engineering.
Job potential-Chemical engineers work in offices as well as laboratories. The average pay scale of the Chemical Engineers is around Rs. 4.8 Lakhs. The salary of a Chemical Engineer ranges from Rs. 2 Lakhs to 12.05 Lakhs yearly. But with experience, the salary range increases as well.
Nanotechnology –
Nanotechnology deals with the study of extremely small things and can be used across all the other general science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering.
It is the third highest booming field when compared with IT and Internet. In India, Bangalore and Chennai are the manufacturing hub for IT and Medicine. It is the field The Indian government has already started funding for.
Job potential-Around Rs 20,000/- to Rs 30,000 per month for fresher and Rs 1 lakh per month for experienced candidates.
There are many such fields which can be great option and nanotechnology is surely one of them.
Nuclear engineering
Nuclear engineers research and develop the processes, instruments, and systems used to derive benefits from nuclear energy and radiation. Many of these engineers find industrial and medical uses for radioactive material. Many of these engineers find industrial and medical uses for radioactive materials like in equipment used in medical diagnosis and treatment , design cyclotrons to treat cancerous tumors.Nuclear scientists basically a physicist and an engineer both
Job potential– Nuclear scientist get salary of range between Rs 15,600 to Rs 39,100 a month with grade pay of Rs 5400.And the ones at nuclear plants get even higher wages.
Environmental Engineering
Environmental engineers are hired to apply engineering techniques and principles, with general science and knowlege of biology, soil science, and chemistry,to get the best of solutions for Environment issues. Environmental engineering include those aimed at improving public health, waste disposal, water treatment ,unsafe drinking water, climate change, environmental sustainability, recycling, and even air pollution.
Job potential-The average salary for an Environmental Engineer is Rs 367,663 per year which tends to increase with experience as well.
Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineers design biomedical equipment and devices, evaluate the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of biomedical equipment ,train clinicians ,Install, adjust, maintain, repair, or provide technical support for biomedical equipment.
Job potential-Salary of a biomedical engineer in India is well paid as compared to other engineering fields. In private hospitals or health clinics, a fresher in biomedical engineering gets a salary between INR 15,000 and INR 25,00o a month. In medical equipment manufacturing comapnies , salary range of INR 20,000 to INR 30,000 a month. In a government sector salary is approximately between INR 16,000 and INR 22,000 a month for a beginners.
Textile engineering
Textile engineering includes designing and controlling all the aspects related to fabrics and yarns. It includes research & development, manufacturing and merchandising the different types of yarn in fabric and fabric to yarns . It also includes the fundamentals of research on polymers which are hence used at many several places
Job potential-For a fresher in India a starting salary package may vary between Rs. 2 lakh – Rs. 3 Lakh. However, this is just an indicative range, the occupational growth is faster, hence the growth is salary is obvious.
