The credibility of the engineering course and its degree by some private Institute is getting doubtful. Recently, Minister of State Human Resource Development Satya Pal Singh has tabled a document in the Lok Sabha mentioning that as many as 277 fake engineering and technical colleges are currently functioning in India.
Delhi tops the list with 66 such colleges offering fake engineering and technical courses. Delhi is followed by Telangana in the second spot with 35 fake technical institutes and West Bengal in the third spot with 27 such colleges. The list also includes 23 colleges in Karnataka, 22 colleges in Uttar Pradesh, 18 colleges in Haryana, 16 colleges in Maharashtra, 11 in Tamil Nadu.
The ministers said that in order to regulate the engineering colleges, the AICTE has been established with a function to grant approval to new technical institutions, the introduction of new courses etc. The AICTE has also notified regulations mandating the technical institutions to obtain the prior approval for running courses in Engineering and Technology.
While replying to questions by three MPs – P Nagarajan of the Anna India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Laxman Giluwa and Rama Devi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mr. Singh in a written reply to Lok Sabha mentioned that the instances of engineering colleges running their courses without the approval of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) have come to the notice of the government. The institutions have also been directed by MHRD and UGC to take necessary AICTE approval, else they will be shut down.

Various instances of technical colleges offering courses without prior approval of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) have come into light. These colleges have been asked to take necessary AICTE approval before offering engineering courses, failing which they would be shut down.

In addition, the University Grant Commission (UGC) is monitoring this issue and also sent instructions to the heads of the states to take action against such institutes running in their jurisdiction, the minister stated.
