Common Admission Test, CAT 2017 registrations, gateway to Indian Institutes of Management and other leading B-schools for the management programs, closed with around 2.31 lakh registrations slightly lower than 232,434 applications received in 2016, says this year test conducting institute IIM Lucknow.
IIM Lucknow is conducting CAT 2017 after a gap of seven years. Last year, CAT recorded 2.32 lakh applications, which was highest since 2010. Apart from the IIMs, other several business schools use the Common Admission Test (CAT) score for admission. CAT 2017 will be held on November 26.
By the original deadline of September 20, the IIMs had received around 211,000 registrations. They subsequently extended the deadline to September 25, to benefit the CAT aspirants. Though the total number of candidates who registered for CAT 2017 was around 2.80 lakh, about 50000 candidates skipped final payment option which is required to appear for the CAT 2017 test.
CAT 2017 convener Prof Neeraj Dwivedi updated that the figures are almost similar to last year. “The final registration numbers are around 2.31 lakh. Around 20,000 (registrations) were added during the extended window,” said Neeraj Dwivedi, convener of CAT 2017.
The actual number of CAT 2016 test takers was 1.95 lakh. Going by the past trend, this year the number of actual test takers is likely to be close to 2 lakh. Among the applicants for CAT 2016, male candidates dropped by one percent to 67% from 68% in the previous year 2015. Female representation has gone up from 32% in 2015 to 33% in 2016.

After two years of a steady fall and sluggish growth in 2011, the number of CAT application count crossed 2.10 lakh and stood at 2.14 lakh. The number of aspirants who registered for the CAT in 2011 and 2010 was 2.05 lakh and 2.04 lakh, respectively. In 2009, about 2.42 lakh students had signed up for the exam. In 2008, 2.76 lakh aspirants registered for CAT.
CAT 2017 Application Correction Option
As per the recent announcement by IIMs, CAT applicants can edit or correct wrong information entered during the CAT application process from September 27 to September 30, 2017. The CAT applicants can now correct the information like Some spelling mistakes, ‘Percentage of Marks scored’, ‘Work Experience’, interview cities, and ‘Programmes Selected’ submitted in the CAT 2017 registration form during application correction window.

Gateway to MBA admissions in 20 IIMs and 150 other institutes, CAT will be held on November 26 in two sessions. The test will be conducted in 140 cities. Candidates will be given the option to select four test cities in order of preference. Test cities and centres will be assigned to the candidates only after the last date for CAT registration, and hence, candidates need not rush to block slots and cities in the initial days of registration.
Candidates can download the admit cards from October 18 till the day of the test. India has 20 IIMs admitting nearly 4,000 students into their flagship postgraduate programme in management.

IIM Lucknow, which is conducting CAT 2017, will allow candidates to correct errors in application between 27 and 30 September. CAT 2017 will be conducted across 140 cities on 26 November.
The format of the test remains the same. According to the notification, like the previous year, the CAT will be a computer-based test and have three sections of 60 minutes each. There will be 34 questions each in Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Ability section, and will be of 102 marks each. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section will have 32 questions and will be of 96 marks. Candidates’ CAT 2017 scorecard will be made accessible at the CAT website. The CAT results are likely to be declared by the second week of January 2018.
“Some questions in each section may not be of multiple choice type. Instead, candidates will have to type direct answers on the screen. Also, like last year, we will allow the use of the basic on-screen calculator for computation,” Dwivedi said. The tutorials to understand the format of the test will be available on the CAT website from October 18. IIM Lucknow has advised candidates to work on the tutorials, available on the website, well in advance.
