The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) issued a notification announcing dates and procedure for applying for Indian Civil Services Examination 2017, popularly known as ‘IAS exam’. As per the official UPSC calendar, the candidates have to submit the application form by March 17,2017. The prelims will be held on June 18,2017 while the main exam is scheduled for October 10,2017.
The Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a nationwide competitive examination in India conducted by UPSC for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS) , Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and others. The number of vacancies to be filled on the result of the examination is expected to be approximately 980 which include 27 vacancies reserved for P.H. Category, that is, 7 vacancies for LDCP, 08 Vacancies for B/LV and 12 Vacancies for H.I. The total number of reported vacancies is around 100 less than last year.

UPSC conducts Civil Services Examination (CSE) in three phases – a preliminary examination consisting of two objective-type papers (general studies and aptitude test), and a main examination consisting of nine papers of conventional (essay) type followed by a personality test (interview). This is the toughest examination in India, with more than 900,000 applicants having success rate of 0.1%0.3%, one of the lowest in the world. The entire process from the notification of the preliminary examination to declaration of the final results takes nearly one year.

Eligibility Criteria for CSE 2017
- The appearing candidates must have a degree from a recognized university incorporated by an Act of Central OR State Legislature in India OR Other educational institution established by Parliament Act OR announced to be deemed university under section-3 of the UGCA), 1956 or have an equivalent degree.

Exam Pattern for Civil Services Examination 2017
Notifications are out for both Civil Services Exam as well as Indian Forestry Services Exam – both having a common Preliminary exam (objective), but separate Main exam (written). The Civil Services Examination will consist of two stages
- In the preliminary round, objective type questions will be asked for the selection of candidates. There will be negative marking for wrong answers by a candidate in the objective type question papers.
- In the main examination, both written and interview will be done for the various Services and posts announced.

Candidates who pass the preliminary exam will qualify for admission to the Civil Services (Main) Examination. They will have to apply online again in a new form provided to them. The main examination is likely to be held in October, 2017. For any further query, the candidates can visit the official website.
How to Apply?
Aspirants can apply online on the official portal https://www.upsconline.nic.in. The applications will be accepted only through online mode. Detailed instructions for filling up online applications are available on the above-mentioned website.
Fees
Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST/PH Candidates who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay fee of Rs. 100/- (Rupees One Hundred only) either by online or offline mode.
Pay by Cash” mode will be deactivated at 23.59 hours of 16.03.2017 i.e. one day before the closing date. Such applicants who are unable to pay by cash on the closing date i.e during banking hours at SBI Branch, for reasons whatsoever, even if holding valid pay-in-slip will have no other offline option but to opt for available online Debit/Credit Card or Internet Banking payment mode on the closing date i.e. till 18:00 Hours of 17.03.2017.
