The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings were announced by the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar at an event in the Vigyan Bhavan on Tuesday, April 03, with the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru leading the top Law Colleges in India list.
Unlike last year, this time the ranking was released under Nine categories compared to Five Categories of the NIRF Rankings Year 2017. Four new categories of Law, Pharmacy, Medical and Architecture have been added and ranked by the ministry first time along with other five categories Overall, Colleges, Universities, Management and Engineering.
This is the second time in a row that IISc Bangalore has been adjudged the best higher educational institute followed by IIT Madras and IIT Bombay in the NIRF rankings. IISc, six IITs in Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Roorkee, JNU, BHU and Anna University in Chennai are the top 10 institutes in the overall category.
Under the Law category, National Law School of India University in Bengaluru has been ranked number 1 followed by National Law University Delhi and National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University of Law, Hyderabad.
Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) and NLU Jodhpur have been ranked 4th and 5th respectively, completing the top five law schools as per NIRF 2018 for India’s top law universities.
The ministry prepares the ranking on the basis of five parameters – Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.

NIRF 2018 Ranking Parameters
This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The methodology draws from the overall recommendations and broad understanding arrived at, by a Core Committee set up by MHRD. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources”, “Research and Professional Practices”,“Graduation Outcomes”, “Outreach and Inclusivity” and “Perception”.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015.
In the third edition of the rankings, a total of 2,809 institutions have participated in nine different categories decided by MHRD — Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture and Law. Collectively there were total 3,954 distinct profiles submitted for multiple categories. This includes 301 universities, 906 engineering institutions, 487 management institutions, 286 pharmacy institutions, 71 law institutions, 101 medical institutions, 59 architecture institutions and 1087 general degree colleges.
The HRD Ministry has made mandatory participation by public institutions in the national institutional ranking framework (NIRF) from next year. The Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Javadekar said that “those public institutions which will not take part in NIRF, will face fund cut from the Central Government ”.
