The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, topped for the fourth year in a row the national ranking of higher institutes released recently by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD).
Of the top 10 institutes, 8 are IITs. The IIT-Bombay slipped from number 2 in 2018 to number 3 this year in NIRF Ranking 2019. National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli has made it the top 10 list while the ranking of the Anna University has slipped from position 8 to position 9 this year.
Besides holding number one position in the engineering college category, the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has bagged the top position in the overall Institutes.

NIRF Ranking 2019 Methodology
The MHRD outlines a methodology to rank institutions across India through NIRF 2019. The NIRF ranking 2019 is done on the basis of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.
Started in 2016, the rankings are announced by the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister, however, due to the Lok Sabha elections, the President Ram Nath Kovind has released the latest list. The NIRF rankings 2019 have been announced under nine different categories – Overall, Universities, Colleges, Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, medical, architecture and law.
