Geology and Geophysics

The study of the solid Earth that involves both qualitative and quantitative descriptions of the solid Earth is known to be the study of Geology. The geology and geophysics intersect in the study of the composition of the deep interior of the Earth and the driving mechanism behind plate tectonics. The geologist applies geophysics to try and measure remotely parts of the Earth that are not available to direct investigation.

The study of the entire planet and its thermal evolution is known as the study of Geophysics. Geophysicists have to study about everything that means the atmosphere (low, middle and high), ionosphere, oceans, cryosphere (glaciers) as well as the solid Earth (crust, mantle, outer and inner core). The Geophysics is also concerned with Earth’s interactions with the Moon and Sun.

Analyze GATE 2019 Geology and Geophysics (GG) Syllabus

Candidate should refer the official GG_Geology-and-Geophysics Syllabus and analyze the exam pattern using previous years papers. As all the subjects don’t have equal marks, few subjects require more efforts than others. Make a priority list of subjects based on marks on preferences given it in previous exams.

Marks distribution of the subject will help you prioritize and allocate preparation time to different subjects. Note that if the allocation is not prepared beforehand then one can end up choosing random topics which may lead to confusion in the end.

Some Important topics of GATE 2019 Geology and Geophysics

There are some common topics in both the sections of geology and geophysics and these are – Coal and petroleum resources of India, atmosphere and greenhouse effect, interior of the earth, paleomagnetism, soil formation, Basic structural geology, mineralogy, stratigraphic principles, Earth and Planetary system, Introduction to remote sensing, properties of rocks and soils, radiometric prospecting for oil, mineral and groundwater, introductory well logging.

GATE Paper Pattern & Marks Weightage for GG

The question is divided into two separate sections, below given is the table which will let you know the GATE 2019 exam pattern and marking system in the description.

GATE 2019 Paper Sections GATE Marks Distribution
Subject Questions (Core Subject) GG 85% of the total marks.
General Aptitude (GA) 15% of the total marks.

General Aptitude Questions:

The question paper contains 10 questions of general aptitude out of total 65 question and these 10 questions carry the total of 15 marks out of 100.

Distribution of Marks:

The multiple choice question carrying 1 or 2 marks question. Negative marking is also there so the questions that are of 1 mark and the answer is wrong then ⅓ marks will be deducted, and the questions that carry 2 marks and the answer is wrong then ⅔ marks will be deducted for that questions.

Guidance for GATE 2019 Geology and Geophysics

Since you don’t have much time to prepare so you have to prepare smartly. So, the main Gurumantra for the preparation are –

S.NO Do’s Don’ts
1 At least attempt one mock test in a week. Choose to ignore certain topics (Learn to select questions not topics)
2 Check your test-taking strategy in the mock tests. Never make an EGO issue for the questions if it’s not solving, take help.
3 Revise the whole course in the shortcuts and strategies you learnt during the preparation. Study for long periods of time without taking breaks. Studies show that the average person can only concentrate for 50 minutes. After that, your ability to learn and attention span decline. Learn to take breaks
4 What is your time allocation strategy? How much time do you plan to spend on each of the sections? In particular, do you plan to devote equal time to each section or slightly more time to the section that you are the strongest at? Procrastination and Overconfidence
