Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday announced the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings 2017 for the top Indian institutions at a press conference in Delhi. Talking about the overall top ranker in NIRF Rankings, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore has obtained the first position among all colleges in India. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras takes the title of the best engineering college among all colleges in India two years in a row.
National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to rank all institutions of higher education in India.
Even in the 2016 NIRF rankings IIT Madras took the top position among engineering institutes. Among the top 10 this year, there are eight IITs including IIT Bombay, Kharagpur, Delhi and Roorkee. The other non-IIT institutes among the top 10 are Anna University, Chennai and Jadavpur University Kolkata.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development set up a core committee to make the methodology to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions based on the overall recommendations.
Last year, over 3000 private and public institutions had participated in the ‘India Rankings 2016‘. Separate list for each stream such as management, engineering, pharmacy etc has been released.
