The Times Higher Education (THE) has released its latest rankings of Universities in emerging economies. Within the emerging economies of the world, Universities from India had a good performance with a record 11 Universities made in the top 100 THE Emerging Economies University Rankings-2020.
China dominates the rankings this year as Chinese Universities – Tsinghua University, Peking University and Zhejiang University are ranked in the top three. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore ranked 16th is India’s top-ranked institution in the rankings.
China with 30 Universities leading the maximum number of Universities in top 100 rankings followed by India which has 11 Universities. A total of 533 universities from a total of 47 countries and territories across emerging economies of the world has participated in this ranking.

Top Indian Universities in Emerging Economies Rankings 2020
Of the total 56 Indian participating universities, the rankings feature 11 Indian universities in the top 100 across emerging economies of the world, marking its highest representation since 2015. This includes the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) among other premier Institutes.

Dropping two places from last year, IISc Bangalore ranks at 16th position among the global universities followed by IIT Kharagpur and IIT Bombay at the 32nd and 34th positions respectively. The other Indian institutions of Technology in the list are IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Indore, IIT Madras, IIT Ropar and IIT Kanpur.
For the very first time, Coimbatore’s Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, which also featured in the MHRD Eminence scheme surprisely entered the top 100 ranking jumping up 51 spots from the jointly ranked at 141 spot last year.
The other universities included in the Institutes of Eminence (IoE) scheme of Indian Government that appear in the top 100 mark in the ranking are – IIT Kharagpur moving up 23 places to 32nd this year, IIT Delhi improved by 28 places and ranked at joint 38th position and IIT Madras climbing 12 places to joint 63rd this year. IIT Ropar and Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) are entering the ranking for the first time, and both debut in the top 100 positions.
The Emerging Economies University Rankings features institutions from countries categorised as ‘advanced emerging,’ ‘secondary emerging’ or ‘frontier’ by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE group, which manages the indices of shares. India falls in the category of secondary emerging economies.
The ‘THE Emerging Economies University Rankings-2020’ are based on 13 performance indicators including faculty, research and citations, industry income and international outlook.
